How to connect two computers to a network

It sometimes happens that you need to connect a couple of computers, or rewrite files, or just provide a connection between them. Nothing is simpler, the only thing you need is a little knowledge and self-confidence.

In order to connect two computers via network cards, you will need installed network cards in both computers, a UTP / FTP / STP / SFTP 4p network cable from which we will make a “Crossover cable – cross-over”, two RJ-45 connectors for termination cable and crimping tool.

The cable is used usual for local networks UTP / FTP / STP / SFTP having 4 pairs. Fortunately, it has become very affordable for the average buyer. Calculate how much cable you need to connect 2 computers, but the length can not exceed 90m and be at least 1.5m.

The cable is crimped on both sides with RJ-45 connectors, cross-over type.

Cross-over (“zero hub”) – used to connect two computers through network cards, directly, i.e. Neither a hub nor a switch is used. Thus, you can connect only two computers at a time.

To connect three or more computers, you will need a hub or switch. Also, when connecting three or more computers through a hub or switch, a Straight-through cable is used.

Straight-through (straight through, using a hub) – the name of this type of cable speaks for itself – it transmits a signal directly from one end to the other, namely from the 1st contact to 1 2-2, 3-3, etc. d. It is used for various types of connections (computer – hub, computer – DSL / ISDN / cable modem, or hub and switch connections between each other).

On one side, conductors should be arranged in the following order:

WHITE ORANGE | ORANGE | WHITE GREEN | BLUE | WHITE BLUE | GREEN | WHITE BROWN | BROWN

On the other hand, the conductors should be arranged in a different order:
WHITE GREEN | GREEN | WHITE ORANGE | BLUE | WHITE BLUE | ORANGE WHITE BROWN | BROWN

After we compressed the Cross-over cable, we include this cable in the network cards of computers and proceed to configure the operating system. We will consider the configuration of the Windows XP operating system, since this OS is one of the most common on user computers.

Press the “Start” button and go to the “Control Panel”. We select the “Network Connections” shortcut and in the window that appears we find the appeared “Local Area Connection” shortcut, launch it and set the following parameters:

On the “General” tab in the “Marked components are used by this connection:” select “Internet Protocol (TCP / IP)” and click the “Properties” button.

In the TCP / IP properties window that appears, select “Use the following IP address”

The range of IP addresses 192.168.x.x (x = 0-255) is reserved for local networks, for this reason I recommend using them. On one computer, specify the address 192.168.0.1, and on the other the address 192.168.0.2. It is very important that the IP addresses differ from each other in the last tsira and in fact, the other numbers in the IP address. The subnet mask can be specified 255.255.255.0, it is installed necessarily the same on all computers on the local network. After that, boldly press the “OK” button and move on.

Now you need to configure the workgroup in which you will work, as well as the name of the computer for presentation on the network. To do this, find the “My Computer” shortcut, right-click on it and select “Properties” and in the window that appears, go to the “Computer Name” tab, click the “Change” button.

In the “Computer Name” field, enter the name by which the computer will appear on the network. Use English letters, numbers, “-“. Try not to use other characters, as this may cause problems in the network.

After you have completed all the fields, feel free to click on “OK”. You have already set up the connection, now it remains to make several open resources (the so-called “share” from the English word “share”). To do this, select the folder that we want to open for access to another computer and click on it with the right mouse button. In the menu that appears, select the item “Sharing and security …” thereby you open the properties window for this folder on the “Access” tab.

In the window that appears, check the box “Open access to this folder” and specify the name of the shared resource that will be visible on the network for access. The name that you give the folder for presentation on the network can be anything and does not have to coincide with the name of the folder.

If you want network users to be able to write or modify files in your folder, also check the box next to “Allow changing files over the network.” Now feel free to click “OK”

The only thing left to do is to allow guest access to your computer so that when you enter your folders on another computer, the password is not asked. Sometimes it only interferes, and sometimes it is a measure of precaution and necessity, so this parameter is changed at your discretion.
