Virtual reality – evil or salvation?
When friendship is apart, love has exhausted itself and the finest thread that tied people is torn – then their paths diverge, and each goes his own way in life. But the man is so arranged that in a difficult moment he again and again raises from the bottom of his memory and neatly stacks the fragments of memories of those who were nearby many years ago, giving light and warmth. About those whose role in his fate has already been played.
How many works of art are saturated with great longing for friends and relatives, lost sight of. How much we are drawn to people whose memory lives in the heart, but whose fate “after us” we don’t know … We cherish our memories for warming our souls and giving the past a touch of mystery.
Now, it became almost impossible to hide from idle curiosity. Information about each person is hidden behind the ambiguous numbers of different testimonies received from birth and accompanying us throughout life. Hundreds of outdoor camcorders record movement. We are registered on sites, entered into databases, and the databases themselves are sold on the market for a thousand rubles.
In the notorious Odnoklassniki, any of our actions is examined under a microscope. The list of “friends” looks like a fiery “cocktail” of loved ones, acquaintances, lovers, colleagues and crooks. As soon as we do something or say on the camera (even a mobile phone), it immediately appears on the Internet. In design and in color.
Such forced publicity does not please everyone. On the contrary, it can harm a person by pushing him face to face with someone whom he has long wiped from his memory, like a nightmare.
All riddles have long been solved – life has turned into a reality show. To hide some facts of the biography is difficult, to get lost in the crowd too, but to lose yourself is easy.
Today, many of us, having played enough on social networks, suddenly realized that we were not ready to easily become a “star” like that. And sometimes it’s better to stay forever for someone in the past, to be a beckoning light in the distance, forever young, happy. Weird! We were so eager to find out the fate of those whom we once lost, and when we found out, it turned out that this was too much awareness …
Life has proven that we still need a personal, inviolable space. Therefore, many people more and more persistently have a desire to plunge into virtual reality with their heads. And, contrary to popular belief, this is not to be removed from the real world. On the contrary – to live on earth and be yourself.
How to hide from prying eyes, being on the Web, while continuing to use its capabilities and advantages? How, “living” on the Internet, to deal with “guests from the past”: to keep friends and protect yourself from those who pull you to the bottom?
Virtual reality only outwardly resembles an artificial illusory world, and even then it is clear that it was created by people. This is a great opportunity to be yourself, to be real. Passing eyes, look straight into the soul. But at the same time, one will have to sacrifice one value bestowed on us by our parents — our own name. After all, if you do not have a name, then you are as if not at all. Therefore, the surest and only way to get out of sight is to change the name.
The beauty of the Web is that you can have dozens of names, be in several places at the same time, join like-minded communities, eventually dwelling on what is really interesting to you. On the Web, you can do what in everyday life causes only a sympathetic smile of others – creativity.
At the same time, one does not need to create a framework for oneself, follow any standards, worry that someone “from his own” will know, laugh, condemn. It is enough to be yourself, and a fictitious name will serve as a reliable shelter for vulnerable pride. In the end, because if no one likes your creations, you can always pretend that you have nothing to do with it.
The security that the Network provides makes us more liberated. Without seeing the interlocutor’s eyes, you can completely free yourself from conventions, easily reveal your soul, be real, say some things that you could never say out loud.
It is customary to blame the Internet for the substitution of values - a person goes into virtual communication instead of living. But if you think about it, at the current pace of life and its price, lively communication with those you really care about would be minimized without the “help” of the Network.
Of course, lies and pretense are an integral part of virtual reality. But this happens to a greater extent because we want to seem better than we really are. Is it really that bad?
Therefore, the Network is not so terrible as it is painted. Deep fearless loneliness is much worse.
